Functional forms at scale
Working with volume, weight, and the limits of clay
Functional forms at scale, this Berlin-based work established how larger ceramic forms hold. Internal supports, wall thickness, and the spacing of elements determine how weight moves through a piece and how it behaves during drying and firing.
Construction required working with compression, thickness, and joinery, resolving structure as part of the form rather than after it. At this scale, decisions are made in advance, with each stage dependent on the stability of the last. The material dictates the pace, and the form must carry itself.
Large structural practice for figurative sculpture.
